5 Easy Transfer Projects to Try Before Your First Furniture Makeover
Excited to try furniture transfers but not quite ready to tackle a dresser? Start small.
A smaller project gives you room to practice positioning your design, rubbing it onto the surface, and carefully lifting the carrier sheet. You’ll have something lovely to show for your effort, too.
Here are five project ideas we’d suggest for getting started.
1. A flat wooden plaque
A simple plaque gives you an open work area without hardware or tight corners to work around. Choose a design that fits comfortably inside the edges, and let it be the centerpiece.
Display your finished plaque on a little easel or add suitable hanging hardware.
2. A keepsake box with a flat lid
Decorate the lid of a small wooden box with a flower, bird, or botanical arrangement. Keep your first design within the flat area so you can focus on application without wrapping it around edges.
It makes a thoughtful place to keep letters, photographs, or small treasures.
3. A wide wooden picture frame
Choose a frame with a broad, flat face. A small accent in one corner is enough to add personality without overwhelming the photograph.
Remove the glass and backing while you work, and plan where the design will sit before applying it.
4. A decorative wooden tray
Look for a tray with a smooth, flat center and enough room to comfortably use your application tool. Arrange a small design in the middle or along one side.
Use the finished tray to display décor. Check the suitability of your transfer and finish before considering uses involving food or moisture.
5. A small wooden sign
Create a little sign for a craft room, entryway, or shelf. Choose one focal image, then build your color scheme around it.
You don’t need to fill every inch. Leaving open space can make your design easier to appreciate.
How to choose your first project
For these practice projects, we’d favor a sturdy piece with a flat work area and a design that fits without complicated cutting or wrapping.
Check your transfer’s package directions for compatible surfaces and preparation requirements. Follow the instructions for your paint and finish as well.
Build a simple supply kit
Your transfer’s included application stick is enough to get started; our Transfer Tool is an optional addition. You do not need a full furniture-sized design for these projects.
