Furniture Painting Prep: A Guide to Wise Owl, Dixie Belle & Fusion

Furniture Painting Prep: a vintage dresser with a dusty blue drawer, paint and brush.

A furniture makeover starts before the first brushstroke. A little time spent cleaning, checking the finish, and choosing the right primer can make the painting part much more enjoyable.

At Canterbury Creative, we love having options. Wise Owl, Dixie Belle, and Fusion each offer their own approach—and even two paints from the same brand can need different preparation. This guide covers Wise Owl Chalk Synthesis and One Hour Enamel, Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral and Silk, and Fusion Mineral Paint.

Start with the piece in front of you

Before choosing a color, take a closer look. Is the surface wood, veneer, laminate, or an existing painted finish? Is it shiny, greasy, waxed, peeling, or stained? Check loose joints and damaged veneer, too. Paint changes the appearance; it does not repair an unstable surface.

For your first project, a small, sturdy side table or nightstand is a manageable place to start. If an old painted finish may contain lead, do not begin sanding it until you have assessed it and chosen an appropriate safe method.

Your furniture-prep checklist

  1. Remove hardware. Keep knobs, screws, and hinges together, and label drawers or doors when their fit matters.
  2. Clean before sanding. Use a cleaner suited to the paint system and surface. Remove furniture polish, grease, and wax rather than spreading them into the finish. Follow the cleaner's dilution and rinsing directions.
  3. Let the surface dry. Give corners, seams, and carved details time to dry as well.
  4. Repair and assess the existing finish. Address loose or peeling material and make necessary repairs. For a sound glossy finish, scuff sanding means dulling the sheen; it does not automatically mean stripping to bare wood. Take particular care with thin veneer.
  5. Remove dust and choose primer. A bonding problem and a stain-bleed problem are different issues. Choose a compatible product that addresses your surface.
  6. Test a discreet area. Check the complete system—prep, primer if needed, paint, and finish—before committing to the most visible part of the piece.

What changes with your paint line?

Wise Owl Chalk Synthesis Paint

Remove polish, wax, and oily buildup first. This chalk-style paint offers flexibility for decorative finishes, but it still needs a suitable protective finish. Allow each paint coat to dry thoroughly before continuing. Wise Owl recommends its Stain Eliminating Primer under white or light colors to help prevent tannin bleed-through. Choose the final sealer for the way the furniture will be used.

Wise Owl One Hour Enamel

Prepare a clean, dry, dull surface and use Wise Owl's recommended Stain Eliminating Primer. Remove oils and wax carefully. Use a dry synthetic brush, stir the paint rather than shaking it, and avoid repeatedly brushing paint that has started to set. Its satin finish is built in; Wise Owl advises against applying wax over enamel.

Primer compatibility matters: Wise Owl warns against shellac-based primers under One Hour Enamel because they can cause crackling. Follow the current primer label for drying before paint. The enamel product page lists a two-hour recoat time; allow longer when conditions require it. Full cure is about 10 days, not one hour.

Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint

Clean with White Lightning as directed and rinse away residue. Dixie Belle recommends a lightly dampened brush for this line. Its blending techniques can also involve light misting—an instruction that should not be copied automatically to Silk.

Dixie Belle describes Chalk Mineral Paint as self-sealing, while recommending protective products such as Clear Coat or Gator Hide for appropriate projects. For everyday furniture, plan the finish around wear and moisture exposure. Its listed cure time is 21–30 days; a quickly dry surface is still developing durability.

Dixie Belle Silk All-In-One Mineral Paint

Remove wax, clean thoroughly, rinse, and scuff slick finishes. Use a dry synthetic brush and do not thin Silk for normal brush application. Apply smooth strokes and avoid overworking it.

Silk includes primer, stain blocker, and topcoat, but difficult surfaces may still need additional preparation or a compatible primer. Built-in protection does not guarantee that every knot, stain, or glossy factory finish is covered. Dixie Belle recommends two coats for increased durability and lists a 21–30 day cure period.

Fusion Mineral Paint

Clean with Fusion's TSP Alternative or another suitable degreaser, remove wax, and scuff glossy surfaces. For exceptionally slick surfaces, Fusion recommends Ultra Grip for adhesion. For bleed-through or pine knots, Fusion recommends Zinsser BIN shellac-based primer. Those products solve different problems.

Fusion Mineral Paint has a built-in matte topcoat, so a separate sealer is not automatically necessary. Product directions list approximately 1–2 hours between coats and about 21 days to cure. Temperature, humidity, and application affect drying. These notes apply to Fusion Mineral Paint, not every other paint family sold by Fusion.

Keep this note beside your project: Fusion's shellac-primer recommendation does not apply to Wise Owl One Hour Enamel. Always match preparation products and techniques to the exact paint formula you are using.

Gather supplies for your paint system

Start with your chosen paint, its recommended cleaner and primer if needed, a suitable brush, lint-free cloths, a drop cloth, and appropriate sanding supplies. Buy a separate finish only when your paint system or intended use calls for one.

Before you put your furniture back to work

Dry to the touch, ready for another coat, and fully cured are three different stages. Treat a newly painted piece gently while the finish develops its strength, and follow the chosen topcoat's directions when one is used.

Once your foundation is ready, there is plenty of room to make it your own. Explore our beginner's guide to furniture transfers or try dry brushing for soft highlights.
