Our Book
Late Night Reflections
Our family's story is still being written—literally.
Yes, we’re writing a book. Because apparently between running Canterbury Creative, family life, medical appointments, construction projects, and trying to remember what day it is, we looked around and thought, “You know what we have plenty of? Free time.”
The book is called Late Night Reflections, and we’re about halfway through writing it. It is happening in those rare pockets of free time—and, true to the title, during the late-night hours when the house gets quiet but your mind absolutely does not.
Why we're writing it
This story began with a mother lying awake searching for answers. It grew into years of researching, asking questions, navigating medical uncertainty, traveling for specialized care, and learning to advocate when the path forward was anything but clear. Those nights held fear and frustration, but also hope, determination, and the kind of love that makes you keep going.
It is also a story about the whole family: how Heather and Mike’s partnership has carried them through unexpected chapters, what chronic illness and caregiving mean for a marriage and the people around it, how family life changes, and how construction, creativity, and Canterbury Creative became part of a new way forward.
We’re sharing the messy parts as well as the meaningful ones—the endless notes, the hospital days, the small victories, the absurd moments that somehow make us laugh, and all the times life decided our carefully made plans were merely suggestions.
What we hope it gives someone else
Most importantly, we want other families navigating rare illnesses and complicated medical systems to know they are not alone. We hope our story encourages people to keep asking questions, trust their observations, seek good care, and hold on to hope even when answers take longer than anyone should have to wait.
The experiences behind the book also helped shape our advocacy through the Vascular Compression Alliance Foundation and Sophia’s Shield. What began as late-night reflections has grown into something we hope can make the journey a little less lonely for someone else.
When can you read it?
We’re making steady progress, but there’s no release date to announce just yet. We’ll share updates here as the next chapters come together—ideally between a little less chaos and a little more sleep. No promises on either.
Read Sophia’s story or meet the Canterbury family while the book is taking shape.
