Why Isn’t My Furniture Transfer Sticking? Tips for a Better Application

If your furniture transfer won’t release from its clear sheet, pause before pulling it farther. Check the surface and work through the stubborn area slowly.

These tips are for traditional Redesign with Prima rub-on transfers. Always follow the directions included with your particular product.

Check for dust, wax, or oil

Transfers need a clean, dry surface. Dust and waxy or oily residue can interfere with adhesion. Prepare the surface before placing your design.

If you’ve already started applying the transfer, avoid introducing cleaners underneath the partially attached artwork. Stop and ask for guidance before risking the rest of the design.

Give each section enough attention

Work across the carrier sheet with the application tool, beginning with light pressure and increasing it as needed. Pay attention to small details rather than rushing through the whole sheet.

Peel slowly

Lift the clear carrier sheet gradually. If any artwork stays on the sheet, lower it back into the same position and rub that section again. Continue checking as you go.

Plan before placing

Arrange your design before removing the protective paper backing. Cutting a large design into smaller sections can make your layout easier to manage.

Store unused pieces carefully

Keep leftover transfer sections flat in a cool, dry place for future projects.
